David Lenart Bloomquist, 68, Grand Marais, died unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 18, 2006 in Grand Marais. He was born May 29, 1938 to Leo Gilbert and Alma (Anderson) Bloomquist in Duluth. He was a life-long resident of Grand Marais, graduated from Cook County High School in 1956, attended UMD for one year and then returned to the woods where he was a self-employed logger. David married Sharon Rouser on Sept. 1, 1962. He served on the Trinity Lutheran Church Council where he was an active member. He served with the Air National Guard for six years, county commissioner for Cook County for one term, and Arrowhead Electric Board of Directors. He worked with the elderly for 19 years and made many trips driving for those with medical needs. Through the years, David has been Sharon's right-hand man. He helped care for their children as well as providing foster care and safe housing for many domestically abused people. He enjoyed hunting with his grandsons, fishing, gardening and watching the kids ride around the neighborhood on motor toys. David liked following them with the lawn-mower and golf cart! He had a great sense of humor, enjoyed playing cards, mind puzzles, Sudoku, watching Wheel of Fortune and was a dedicated fan of his .grandchildren as they participated in their activities. He is preceded in death by his parents; Stepmom Lydia; two brothers-in-law and two nieces. David is survived by his wife, Sharon; sons and daughters Dean (Sheila) Bloomquist of Rochester, Lisa, Bloomquist of Grand Marais, Jody (David) Schutte of Flagstaff, Ariz., Missy (Tony) Smith of Grand Marais, and Darren (Trisha) Bloomquist of Grand Marais; brothers John and George (Florence) all of Grand Marais; sisters Thelma (Dick) Pokorny of Ord, Neb., and Shirley Kokal of Eveleth; grandchildren Jennifer and Marisa Schutte, Kyle Bloomquist, Devin and Connor Smith, step-grandchildren Melissa Weseloh and Corey and Lindsay Nelson, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Grand Marais and continued at noon until the 1 p.m. service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Sept. 21. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hovland. Burial will be at a later date.
